The Daily System That Creates Champions | Mental Toughness Academy Week 4
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In Week 4 of this special six-part Mental Toughness Academy series on The Burn Podcast, Ben Newman introduces the most impactful performance tool he's taught for more than 16 years: The Prizefighter Day.
Elite performance isn't built on motivation—it's built on intentional daily disciplines. In this session, Ben reveals the same proven system used with championship teams, Fortune 500 leaders, and top performers to create consistency, accountability, and continual peak performance. You'll learn why success isn't determined by occasional great moments, but by the decisions and choices you make every single day.
Drawing on stories from coaching at Alabama under Coach Nick Saban, working with elite business leaders, and developing champions across sports and business, Ben explains how your Burn and your Prize Fighter Day work together to create a life of sustained excellence. You'll discover how to reverse-engineer your greatest successes, identify the daily disciplines that truly move the needle, and build a blueprint for winning personally, professionally, and through service to others.
This week also challenges the belief that balance doesn't exist. Instead, Ben shows you how intentional discipline across every area of your life allows you to perform at your highest level without sacrificing what matters most.
Inside this session, you'll build your own Prize Fighter Day, complete a seven-day performance review, and create a daily system that helps you stack winning days—one decision at a time.
Because champions don't hope for great days.
They design them.

Mental Toughness Needs Daily Execution
SPEAKER_00Over the last three weeks, you've discovered your burn, strengthened your belief, and learned how to control your response when adversity shows up. Now it's time to put it all into action because mental toughness isn't built by what you know, it's built by what you consistently do. In week four, I'm sharing the most impactful performance tool I've taught for more than 16 years. It's a system that's helped championship teams, elite athletes, Fortune 500 leaders, and top performers win one day at a time. We're going to build your prize fighter day, a daily blueprint that aligns your burn with the disciplines, habits, and intentional actions that lead to continual peak performance. This is where preparation meets execution.
unknownI'm a dead boy if I'm a dumb money. I'm a dead boy if I don't money. I'm a dead boy if I don't bow no money. I'm a dead boy if I'm a dumb body.
SPEAKER_01What if I shared there was one tool? There was a way that you could look at your life differently, you could win more based upon every decision and choice you made in everything that you do, personally, professionally, and in your service to others. No longer being part of that world of individuals who tell you how great they want to be, and then we have a conversation with their action and we find out they really don't want it that bad. I'm talking about the world of the highest performers who understand that burn that fuels them, that ignites that why and purpose, that causes them to show up on the days they don't feel like it, and especially after they win, because they understand what it means to attack the process by having a prize fighter day. You see, I've always loved the analogy. Kind of like on Instagram at continued fight, on X at continued fight, because life is this continued fight. I learned that from my mom, the greatest champion of life I've ever known. And your life is gonna be a fight. It's gonna be a battle. There'll be challenge and adversity. But what if you actually knew the exact system, the tool that would help you win every single day? Personally, professionally, and in that service to others. What would that mean to how you show up? What would that mean to the winning that you would do in your life? I love the boxing analogy because you know, people used to say that, you know, life is like a marathon. No, life is a sprint, it's a marathon, it's a boxing match all in one. And when you understand the structure of a prize fighter day, something that I've been teaching for over 16 years.
The Tool Built From A Comeback
SPEAKER_01The first time I walked an individual through a prize fighter day 16 years ago, that individual who had been in financial services for 13 years took the model, made the decision and choice as to how he was going to frame his day based upon past success, because we looked at the past success, we pulled it down, we reverse engineered it, we put it right in front of his face, and we designed what it looked like to win in all these areas so that he could attack and drive performance. He had gone 13 years, never hitting getting in the top 3%. It's called the million-dollar round table for financial advisors. 13 years he'd never hit it. He hired me when he was nine months into the calendar year. That means three months to go. We're heading into the prize fighter rounds of that championship fight. Most people would have thought it was improbable. I slowed him down. I helped him believe in himself again. And then we designed based upon the highest periods of winning he had in his life previously by reverse engineering the daily behaviors, the disciplines, personally, professionally, and of service, what it would take to win. And he made a choice to change his behaviors and to stack days. And in three months, he did more than he had done in the previous nine months and collectively qualified for that million-dollar roundtable for the first time. The Prize Fighter Day was born. The Prize Fighter Day is now the most significant tool that we use to drive the highest levels of performance with champions in business and in sports. So imagine we now have this opportunity to walk through in your life what your prize fighter day looks like. The decisions and choices you can make by encouraging you to go back to that period of time when you were winning at your highest level and to pull it down, put it right in front of your face. And we're gonna design exactly what it takes for you to win. We're gonna remind you of the disciplines in your life that have caused you to win.
Coach Saban Makes It Nonnegotiable
SPEAKER_01And the clarity and intentional focus and connection to the daily behaviors that cause winning is why Coach Saban, when he hired me at Alabama, made sure when he asked me after my second season with the team, I need you to write, Ben, I need you to write a mental conditioning for success program for the players, for the coaches to understand how the players are focused, but also for the parents to understand how we train and mentally condition these athletes to understand what it takes to win. It's one of the greatest honors of my professional career when Coach Saban the GOAT asked you to write a mental conditioning for success program, and he told me the two things that must go in this program were the burn and your prize fighter day. You see, every new opportunity I had at Alabama, just like with that financial advisor, they made sure that every brand new player, the rookie classes they called them, it was the freshmen and those players that had transferred, that I would spend after one of their initial lifts during their initial time at Alabama, I would spend time in small group settings, typically 20 minutes, with about 20 players teaching them what the burn was and helping them build their prize fighter days. And Coach Saban believed that those elements of breaking down what it would take for them to win in every decision they made became the difference for how they attacked every day. It came down to a prize fighter day. So if it worked 16 years ago, if it worked for the GOAT, if it led to championships, if this is the way I've been living my life all these years and working with some of the highest performers, and you're this next high performer that I get to learn, grow, and attack life with, then wouldn't it make sense that now we help you design your prize fighter day?
Sponsor: Q-Logics Business Systems
SPEAKER_01This episode of The Burn is brought to you by our dear friends and partners at Q Logics. Now you know I don't co-sign things I don't believe in, and I believe in John Chiarando and the team at Q Logics. He's built multiple nine-figure businesses, real integrity, real character, the kind of guy you want in your corner. But here's what happened. All that expertise, all that knowledge, it was just his. Locked in his head, his decisions, his team, you couldn't access it. So John created Q-Logics. He basically said, How do I make everything I've built available to people who actually need it? Here's what that looks like. Q-Logics helps you see the blind spots in your business, the gaps you don't even know you have. You don't know what you don't know. They're your tour guide through that. Q-Logics helps you build systems that make your business work better, or they ask better questions so you're approaching it in the most effective way. And Q Logics has access to a network of businesses and resources, real connections, real synergies that can accelerate what you're building. If any of that resonates, go to Qyphen Logics, L-O-G-I-X.com forward slash Ben. Fill out a form, their team will research your situation personally, then they'll tell you straight, can they actually help? Thank you to our friends and partners at Q Logics. Make sure you find out more about Q Logics and your opportunity to win more with them today.
Accountability Mirror And Real Balance
SPEAKER_01You know, winning is your ability to look yourself in the mirror one day at a time and say, today I gave it my very best. But like that honest mirror of accountability to where you did it or you didn't do it. You either did it or you didn't do it. And you honestly tell yourself, did I give it my all or did I not? No more lies, no more self-talk, no negative self-talk. We're gonna help you identify the behaviors and then either you do it or you don't. And one more thing we have to address before we help you build your prize fighter day so you can learn to drive continual peak performance in your life is that there's a lot of speakers and coaches out there who talk about the fact that balance doesn't exist. It's not true. I'm gonna help you understand how you can embrace personal, professional, and of service so that you can attack multiple areas of your life. Doesn't mean you spend the exact same amount of time, but attacking multiple areas of your life is balance in multiple areas to drive performance and winning in everything that you do. The reason why most coaches, speakers, individuals in this line of work tell you balance doesn't exist is because they lack discipline. They maybe lack discipline personally or they lack discipline professionally or they don't believe in giving back to others every single day. And because they lack discipline, they tell you that it doesn't exist. I'm here to tell you that it does exist. And we're gonna win together, and we're gonna change that dichotomy, and we're gonna change that belief system, we're gonna change how you think, we're gonna change how you attack, and it's gonna be your choice to take ownership of it, fueled by that burn. So you can look yourself in the mirror, you can get the stacking days based upon winning you've already done in your life, based upon new behaviors, new disciplines, and taking ownership of your prize fighter day.
Personal Objectives Based On Choices
SPEAKER_01You will see in your worksheet for your prize fighter day, we break it down into three sections, and we're now gonna break this down for you. You've heard me say it multiple times, and that's intentional why I keep saying it. Personal, professional of service. First, we're going to attack the personal objectives in your life. Now, we already went through earlier and we talked about a lot of goals for you, right? Personal goals. I want you to think what is a personal goal if you gave yourself permission to do it, but I want you to think about the most important personal goal, right? So maybe this is something based upon nutrition and exercise. Maybe this is something based upon spending more present time with your loved ones and with your family. Maybe it's those two things. Maybe you have two objectives. So on Prize Fighter Days, some people may have one, two, or three objectives. And we have to be careful because of something in psychology that we call channel capacity. We can only focus on so many things. So we have to be able to lock in on that one thing. So if it's nutrition, I have the ability to lock in on my nutrition one meal at a time. If I'm focused on working out, breaking a sweat every day, no more excuses for not working out. I say this very humbly. I have done what I call the unrequired workout. It's a workout that takes 60 minutes. It's a workout most people can't get through one time. I've done it for almost six straight years at the filming of this Mental Toughness Academy. Over six, almost six straight years, not a day off. No more excuses. You either do it or you don't. I can lock in on that workout for one hour, and so can you. Maybe your workouts are 15 minutes because you've been undisciplined in your workouts up until this point. Maybe it's 20 minutes, maybe it's 30 minutes. Lock in on nutrition, lock in on your workouts, lock in on being present and focused with your family. You can attack multiple areas of your life. Be careful of the individuals leading you who say, look, we got to attack this business objective. Let your family know you'll see them in a year. Don't worry about your nutrition. Don't worry about working out. You will never understand what your highest level of performance looks like if you don't take care of yourself. Because mentally, the way our brain responds, you will never give your all to your professional life if you don't take care of yourself personally. I know this to be true, and I got the 20 years of winning with some of the highest performers to ever walk the face of the earth to back up what I'm teaching you. But we have to choose to take ownership. So the personal objective of your prize fighter day, what should be there? And when you write this down on your prize fighter day worksheet, make sure that it's a choice. I will train for 60 minutes with intentional focus every day. That's a choice. You either do it or you don't. I will follow my meal plan every day. It's a choice. That's a yes or a no. I didn't say you're gonna lose two pounds every day. It's I will follow my meal plan. I will be present and focused with my family for 15 minutes when I get home from work because that sets the tone for you to be present with your loved ones and family or significant others when you are finished with your work day. What I just gave you are examples of things that are 100% your choice. So when you design the personal aspect of your prize fighter day, make sure it's not a result you're writing down. It's a discipline, it's an action step that it's your choice to attack.
Professional Discipline That Drives Winning
SPEAKER_01Now, how about professionally? Professionally, what I want to encourage you to do is I want you to think about that period of time in your life professionally, you performed at your highest possible level. What did your behaviors look like? What did your daily discipline look like? What did it look like for you to win? What did you do every day? Maybe it lasted a week, maybe it's been three months and you're in the period of winning right now, and now you're looking to elevate in our work together. Maybe it was two years ago and you've pulled away from the discipline because the mental toughness just hasn't been there. And that's why we're locked in on building your prize fighter day together. What is it professionally that you know when you do it? And we all know it. I could say to you, what's the single most important daily discipline professionally for you to know if you stack that discipline every day that you will win? You know what it is. Write it down for me. Put it on your proverbial mental shelf. Just take a moment, think about it for me right now, in this moment. What is the single most important daily discipline for you to win profession? Now, after you write that down, after it goes in your proverbial mental shelf, I now we got to be honest with each other. Remember that mirror of accountability, that honesty. This is one of the most important things. We've got to be honest with ourselves if we ever want to change behavior, change performance, change results, and win more at the highest level. You just wrote down or you just acknowledge the single most important daily discipline professionally in your life, which needs to be part of your prize fighter day. If it's not, we're gonna make it part of it moving forward. But you just wrote it down. Over the last 30 days, how would you rate yourself on a scale of one to ten with what you just wrote down as the single most important daily discipline for you to know that you will win in your life? I've done this enough times to know that that answer might be a three, it might be a six, it might be an eight, it's probably not a ten. But let's say, for example, that it's a six, which is typically the average when somebody's really being honest with themselves. You doing 60% of what you need to do every day is not gonna lead you to the level of winning that you would want for yourself and for your loved ones. So we have to stop the excuses. We have to stop the self-talk, we have to stop and regain control of the action and discipline that we know will cause us to win. You have to look at that number if it's a six and say that's unacceptable to you. If you're a parent, or think of when you were in school, if you had a 60% across the board in all your grades, the principal of the school probably would have called you and said, we're gonna have to transition you to another school. We love you, we love your energy, we love your passion, you're an amazing human being, but this school is not working out for you. Well, that's because you had accountability to the standards and expectations of the school. But many of us, when we step into adulthood, we don't carry those same standards, those same expectations. We let ourselves off the hook. We allow ourselves to operate at 60% when that's almost failing and it's unacceptable. So at some point in time, we got to say, now is when I decide to change. And we can change together, and I'm here to coach you through it. It's why I always share, I'm not a motivational speaker, I'm not an inspirational speaker. I am a coach. And it's your prize fighter day that's gonna change how you show up every day to build the disciplines and the winning formula by stacking these days so that you never trip on anything that's behind you, but we attack what your highest level of winning looks like. So on your worksheet, you're gonna write down the professional aspects of what it takes for you to win. It'll include that one discipline you just wrote down, and maybe there's a second or a third. What are the most important disciplines, not results? Right? If you're in sales, oh, I sold this and it cost X. I drove this amount of revenue today. That's a result. We don't control results, we control the action. And what you do today manufactures everything you say you want in the future. So if we know the behavior, we know the discipline that causes a result, we must be disciplined and follow through with that action, with that discipline, knowing the byproduct is revenue, the byproduct is a sale, the byproduct is winning.
Daily Service That Changes The Day
SPEAKER_01Now, of service. That of service piece. The great John Wooden. This is the third aspect of your prize fighter day. Legendary coach John Wooden, one of the greatest coaches to ever coach anything, head basketball coach of UCLA, won 10 championships in 12 years. John Wooden, one of the greatest thought leaders to ever walk the face of the earth. John Wooden used to say, you cannot have a great day until you've done something for somebody else with no expectation of anything in return. What can you do every day to help make this world a better place? Reality is this world we live in today needs more people to love on people. So maybe it's holding the door for somebody. Maybe it's sending a text message to recognize that somebody's doing good. Maybe it's buying that unexpected cup of coffee for somebody who's in the Starbucks line behind you, a random act of kindness. That's something you could do every day, but it's an act of service. We're going to take care of other people because that creates balance. It causes you to feel good. It makes the world a better place for us all to live and thrive in. Or one of my favorite business examples is what I call an unexpected intentional touch. Imagine you're leading others, you're in a business setting. Don't wait for an annual review to tell somebody that they're doing great. Stop. Send the text message, give them the positive feedback. An unexpected intentional touch. You hear their voice on a phone call with a client, they're doing great work. Don't wait, tell them now in real time. We can control the behaviors that cause us to win. That is your prize fighter day. This coupled with the burn, which is the secret of the highest performance. A burn and a prize fighter day. What are the two things that Coach Saban said? Better be in that mental conditioning for success program. A burn and a prize fighter day. Because a burn causes you to ignite that why and purpose and to show up on the days you don't feel like it, and especially after you win. Because how do you show up after you win is a powerful question. And when you connect to your burn, you will want to continue to win regardless of how much winning you're doing. And the prize fighter day is the reminder of you knowing what it takes and the design and the discipline and the action every day to win.
Build It In 15 Minutes
SPEAKER_01So we're now gonna put time on a clock for you. And I want you to take the worksheet of your prize fighter day, and I want you to dive into it. I'm gonna put 15 minutes on a clock. I want you to take 15 minutes, and I want you to dive into going to work on your prize fighter day, personally, professionally, and of service. And then once you write down what you believe your prize fighter day should be, I want you to take out your calendar and I want you to go one week from today, and I want to run what I call a seven-day test. I want you to put a reminder on your phone to do a seven-day check-in on your prize fighter day. This is the equivalent of an Alabama when we would break down game film to see our areas to improve from a game. You're gonna break down the game film of your last seven days and make any changes. And if we got that prize fighter day right, personally, keep everything the same. Professionally, keep it the same. Of service, keep it the same. If something needs to change, we're gonna change it and retest it. But if you want it bad enough, you'll lock in with intentional focus, you'll design the day, you'll attack it one day at a time. We'll get the stack in those days, we'll run that test, and then you're gonna have a prize fighter day fueled by that burn that will allow you to approach winning and to receive winning and to have results in your life at a whole new level.
Seven-Day Review And Finish
SPEAKER_01And a prize fighter day will cause you to have continual peak performance in your life.
