Why Purpose Isn't Enough | Mental Toughness Academy Week 1
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In Week 1 of this special six-part Mental Toughness Academy series on The Burn Podcast, Ben Newman lays the foundation for everything that follows by introducing the one concept he believes separates elite performers from everyone else: The Burn.
Drawing from nearly two decades of coaching championship teams, Olympic athletes, Fortune 500 organizations, and leaders across the world—including his work as Mental Conditioning Coach for the Alabama Crimson Tide football—Ben shares the same mental training principles that helped shape national championship teams and thousands of high performers. You'll learn why purpose alone isn't enough, how your Burn ignites your purpose, and why understanding that deeper fire changes the way you show up every single day.
Ben also shares the deeply personal story of his mother, whose courage, resilience, and unwavering determination became the foundation of his own Burn. Through that story, you'll begin identifying the experiences, sacrifices, challenges, and convictions that can fuel your own pursuit of excellence. Along the way, you'll complete your first Mental Toughness Assessment, begin building your Burn Journal, and take the first steps toward developing the mindset and discipline required to perform at your highest level.
This isn't six weeks of motivation. It's six weeks of coaching designed to help you build lasting mental toughness, elevate your discipline, and attack the second half of the year with greater purpose, clarity, and conviction than ever before.

Welcome And The Burn Framework
unknownI'm a dust boy if I dumb bad. I'm a dust boy if I'm a dumb bad. I'm a dust boy if I dumb bad dumb I'm a dust boy if I'm a dumb bad.
SPEAKER_00Welcome back to the burn. I am Ben Newman, and you know how we do this every single week. We bring you a story of an athlete, an entertainer, a celebrity, somebody from the business world who's helped us understand that why and purpose are not enough. There's this underlying fire that ignites, it's a burn that ignites your why and purpose and causes you to show up on days you don't feel like it, and especially after you win. And then sometimes you know we do special episodes where you just get me. And something has been on my heart lately that made our team decide to call a significant audible for the burn.
Six-Week Mental Toughness Reset
SPEAKER_00Over the next six weeks, we have intentionally designed a unique opportunity for you to go behind the scenes with us, to elevate your discipline, to take more ownership of your mindset, to silence the excuses, to silence the fear, to silence the doubts, and to start to attack like you never have before. Now, members of our standard elite mastermind, you know exactly what we're talking about. Members of our roundtable, you know what I'm talking about. Members of our uncommon live family, you know where we are going. Each and every single one of you, if we haven't had the opportunity yet to spend time for you to understand the power of your mental toughness, then this journey over the next six weeks is for you. And any of the individuals that we already work with from any of those powerful groups and communities and really family for us, it's time. It's time for us to come out of the locker room, knowing that we're further through the first six months of the year. This is now the second half of the year. We are coming out of the locker room and we're ready to evaluate our behaviors and make any necessary changes in order to elevate, in order to grow, in order to get uncomfortable. Because I'm sick and tired of having to listen to all of the negativity and people telling you to join them on the sidelines and just wait to see how they there's no waiting in greatness. There's no waiting in you finding out what your best looks like. You know, I
Nick Saban And The Tools
SPEAKER_00think back to when Nick Saban hired me to become the mental conditioning coach for the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2017. Coach Saban hired me after the team had already been winning championships, but he knew what's the extra edge, what's the extra that he can give to win more championships. And he hires me in 2017. I didn't go to Alabama and deliver one speech. I had the blessing of becoming a mental conditioning coach, being there 15 to 20 times per year, establishing some of the greatest relationships I have in my life today with coaches and with players, players I still work with in the NFL that are winning Super Bowls now. And in Alabama, Sabin, after two years of working together, and the first national championship that I had the blessing of being a part of, Coach Saban said, Ben, I want you to write the mental conditioning for success program for the Alabama football team and for the program. And we're going to use it for development of the players, and we're going to use it for uh recruiting, and we're going to use it for different aspects of how we grow and elevate. Unbelievable honor to have Coach Saban ask this of me. And I did a tremendous amount of research where we included so many of the amazing things Coach Saban was already doing before I got there. But Coach Saban said, include anything and everything that you want to, which is everything I'm going to teach you over the next six weeks. But he said, if there's anything of yours that you leave out, that's fine, but you cannot leave out the burn and your prize fighter day. Coach Saban said those two tools have had a significant impact on how our players show up, the ownership that they take, and the winning we are doing on the field. Those two things must be included. So I'll share over these next six weeks those two mental training tools, along with the other six mental training tools that have made up your mental toughness playbook and that are part of the Mental Toughness Academy. Your mental toughness playbook has been downloaded or sold over a million times. We're on our fourth volume of the book, and all the contents were in that mental conditioning success book in Alabama that led to two national championships in the five years that I was part of the program. It was a blessing to work with Coach Saban. It was a blessing to be able to work with leaders like Coach Kleiman 148 games on the sideline with him, Big 12 championships, national championships at North Dakota State, having been a part of gold medals that were won in the Olympics, being part of work with the Indiana fever, learning from leaders like Sean McVay, iron sharpens iron relationships, the things that I've learned with those individuals, the things we've been able to empower and instill, the top 1% of financial advisors in the world, and people at Microsoft and Google and some of the largest and fastest growing entrepreneurial organizations in the world through our coaching work. We're going to share these frameworks with you over the next six weeks. And it's your opportunity and your next. But all I'm going to ask you to do is to take ownership with us, to lean in with us, to attack the work with us. As
Ben’s Burn And Personal Legacy
SPEAKER_00we explore what your burn is, that fire inside of you, because everybody's burn is different. You know, my burn to continue to carry on my mother's legacy. She died far too soon, passing away from amyloidosis 11 days before my eighth birthday. Divorced when I was six months old. My dad was a drug addict, manic depressive, bipolar, everything under the sun. When I was six months old, my mother said enough is enough and had the courage to divorce my dad. Then a few years later, my mother is diagnosed with amyloidosis, 24-hour nursing care in the house, would come to the dinner table with an IV stand to ask me how my day was at school when I was a seven-year-old boy. And then there were those nights where she couldn't tuck me in at night. I had to go and climb under her IV wires to tuck her in at night. And even though she passed away 11 days before my eighth birthday, my mother has instilled this fire inside of me. It's why these veins pop out of my neck. I'm not yelling at anybody. This is called passion. And many of you have felt it through the eight seasons of the burn. You felt it in our work together through coaching, and you're gonna feel it for these next six weeks. But that burn that my mother instilled inside of me, even though she passed 11 days before my eighth birthday, it caused me to say, I will not waste a day. I'm a 47-year-old man, she passed away at 38. Those are nine extra years that my mom never got, and you better damn well believe I will not waste a day. And I don't want you to waste one either. And the secret to the highest performers in the world is that they understand their burn, they understand their fire. My burn to carry on my mother's legacy is not gonna wake you every day and cause you to attack on a different level. But we're gonna help you explore what your burn is. Maybe sacrifice you're making for somebody, maybe sacrifice that was made for you or somebody telling you that you can't do something and that lit a fire as you tapped into your darkness to attack your next level. We're gonna explore your burn. We're gonna take you through attaining belief in yourself. We're gonna teach you the power to reframe. We're gonna teach you about the most unbelievable affirmation statements, I am statements, and some stories behind those I am statements that will blow you away. We're gonna teach you how to design your prize fighter day, just like those Alabama football players that led to national championships and disciplines that have now caused many of those players who didn't go to the NFL to be running unbelievable organizations, business owners that still call on me today for advice, and also attacking and winning championship Super Bowls in the NFL.
Sponsor Message Q Logics
SPEAKER_00This episode of The Burn is brought to you by our dear friends and partners at Q Logics. Now, you know I don't co-sign things I don't believe in, and I believe in John Chirando and the team at Q Logics. He's built multiple nine-figure businesses, real integrity, real character, the kind of guy you want in your corner. But here's what happened. All that expertise, all that knowledge, it was just his. Locked in his head, his decisions, his team, you couldn't access it. So John created Q Logics. He basically said, How do I make everything I've built available to people who actually need it? Here's what that looks like. QLogics helps you see the blind spots in your business, the gaps you don't even know you have. You don't know what you don't know. They're your tour guide through that. Q-Logics helps you build systems that make your business work better or they ask better questions so you're approaching it in the most effective way. And Q Logics has access to a network of businesses and resources, real connections, real synergies that can accelerate what you're building. If any of that resonates, go to Qyphen Logics, L-O-G-I-X.com forward slash Ben. Fill out a form. Their team will research your situation personally, then they'll tell you straight, can they actually help? Thank you to our friends and partners at Q Logics. Make sure you find out more about Q Logics and your opportunity to win more with them today.
Prize Fighter Days And Discipline
SPEAKER_00It's your time to build your prize fighter day and understand the disciplines that are going to cause you to win in a world where everybody tells you how great they want to be, but when we have a conversation with their action, we find out how bad they really want it. Be one of those individuals who recognizes, as I tell everybody that comes through our Leaders Academy, our former coach-to-coaches program, that you can only lead somebody to the level of discipline in which you live. So if your discipline through the first half of the year wasn't strong enough, we're not going to trip on anything that's behind us. But we're going to unite and elevate together as we come out of the locker room for this second half of the year over the next six weeks. In order to build those prize fighter days and build your prize fighter day mornings. And write your legacy statements and build your action plan to make sure that this isn't just six weeks of motivation. This is coaching like you've never experienced in your life that lays a foundation for you to attack and believe like you never have before, fueled by your burn. And maybe it's the beginning of our work together. Or maybe it's a reminder of the significance of the foundation we already built in our work together, and now we attack like never before. Like a reset. So I'm excited for this journey if you can't tell. Our team has put so much into the design and the rollout of these next six weeks. So get ready. Because the burn is about to get a little warmer, the fire a little bit hotter. And the recognition that as we go through this work together, and I challenge you, week after week after week, for these six weeks, that you're going to attack the rest of this year like you never have before. Any of the fears, the doubts, the uncertainties, the people who are trying to get you to join them on the sidelines of complacency and choosing not to do anything, we're not going there. Listening to the coaches and the influencers who make really great videos and have a great bunch of sales talk, but they've never done anything to have the opportunity or the actual experience or understanding what winning looks like in the corporate world, like I've built with some of the greatest champions in sports and business over the last 20 years. Yeah, we're going to show you what it actually looks like. Not a bunch of talk from people who have actually never done it. And you get to lean in with us for six weeks. It's time to get a hold of your mindset. It's time to understand and to build mental toughness. It's time to build the disciplines through your prize fighter days fueled by your burn to elevate like you never have before. Get ready for these next six weeks. Because now we go. Now the work begins. Before
Mental Toughness Pre-Assessment
SPEAKER_00we dive into the proven mental training tools and the system that's going to elevate you to your next level, we need to get real with each other. Having done this for almost 20 years, I find that even when people are driving success or those periods of time when you feel down and self-talk has been taking over, we fail to put the mirror of accountability in front of our faces. And so we need to have a check-in for you and take a pre-assessment on where is your mental toughness now. So what I would like for you to do is walk through this pre-assessment with me. And I want to walk through these questions, and then I'm going to give you time to answer these questions so we can understand how mentally tough are you now, so that we have an understanding of where we are going to start in building the system, implementing the tools, and helping you drive the action to elevate. Inside of your mental toughness playbook, you will find when you go to the page for your mental toughness pre-assessment, there's several questions that are listed. The first question: I believe I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. You'll see there's a scale of rating yourself from one until five. Five being the highest number. That means that you believe you can accomplish anything. And I want you to be honest because this number is for you. It's not for anybody, it's not to post on social media. This is your opportunity to put the mirror of accountability in front of your face so we can understand where are you now in determining where we start in order to attack how great you want to be. So one through five, five being the highest number. I believe in myself at the highest level possible. Number two, I have a burn or purpose statement that I connect to daily to drive my actions. So you either do or you don't. If you don't, that's okay, but I want an honest answer. I have a core set of values that help me keep perspective when things get hard or I face adversity. Do you have those values now or do you not have those values? The honest answer. We're looking for an honest assessment. I have a strong and clear vision of the person I want to be in my life. When I say clear, clear doesn't mean you kind of know. Clear means you know exactly what you want for your life and rate yourself one through five. I have a solid and trackable routine, solid and trackable routine that is activity-based and not focused on getting results. Far too many people are holding on too tightly to the results that they can't control rather than understanding, identifying the process that they can control to drive continual peak performance. I have complete clarity on what I want my legacy to be. What do you want your legacy to be? You either know it or you don't know it. Or it's a little bit clearer, but it's not quite crystal clear. And after we take you through the tools in this proven system, you will have clarity of exactly where you want to go and the legacy that you want to leave. I have cultivated an environment that fully supports my goals and my values. Once again, rate yourself one through five. Overall, I feel I have a good foundation of mental toughness. One through five. When you finish this exercise, I want you to take five minutes. I want you to lock in. Five minutes. Silence all the noise, turn off your cell phone, get away from the computer, lock in for five minutes. And then I want you to tally up your score, and then we'll have a score down at the bottom, and it'll give you a range of where you currently are for your mental toughness. And this will be our benchmark of understanding where you are. And then we're gonna start attacking the tools and the system to help you elevate, to not just change this number, but to change your life. Lock in, do the assessment five minutes, and we're gonna start attacking these tools. So
Janet’s Story And Beating The Odds
SPEAKER_00many people always ask me, what's the secret of the highest performers in the world? Now that you're part of the Mental Toughness Academy, I'm gonna have to share that secret with you to help you understand what unleashing the burn inside of you will mean to you changing the score on that assessment you just took, changing how you show up every day, changing how big you think, and changing the impact that you want to have on others. I'll tell you a story. Take you back to 1983, St. Louis, Missouri. This story is about a teacher named Janet. Now, Janet was not only a teacher, but she was a single mom fighting to make ends meet. Found the courage when her youngest son was six months old to divorce her husband, who is a drug addict, alcoholic, manic depressive, bipolar, everything under the sun. And she finally said, enough is enough. This single mom, this teacher, in 1983 was diagnosed with a rare muscle disease called amyloidosis. You start to question why when you thought about who she was and how she showed up in life. She was one of those teachers, maybe you had one just like her when you were in school. Long brown hair, big brown eyes, a pearly white smile, and energy that went for days. Her students loved her. And her two boys adored her. Yet she's diagnosed with this disease and finds out there is no cure. Doctors in St. Louis, Missouri, where she lived, helped her understand that there were two hospitals in the United States that were treating the disease: the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and the Boston Medical Center. For some reason, Janet's team of doctors chose for her to go to Boston. Picture this: she boards a plane, flies to Boston, and has a meeting at the amyloidosis research department at the Boston Medical Center. You can only imagine, most people have never even heard of the disease. It's one of the rarest of the rare. Janet's greeted by one of the assistants of the two foremost leading experts in the world for the treatment of amyloidosis, Dr. Martha Skinner. They take her into an old rickety conference room, sit her down at an old rickety table in an old rickety chair. A handful of minutes go by, and Dr. Skinner walks into the room to meet Janet for the first time. She looked Janet dead square in her big brown eyes and said, You're only the second woman under 40 years old I've ever seen or heard of having amyloidosis. You have two to four years to live. How would you respond? Janet decided to take out an old blue mead notebook. Maybe like you used to have in school, maybe yours was another color. And on the pages of that notebook, she unleashed her positive mental attitude onto the world. She would write things such as beat the statistics, beat the odds, live with the disease that is chronic and fatal. Believe in yourself, combat anything, purpose in life. It was those words on that page that put a burn and a fire inside of her. To fly back and forth from Boston to St. Louis, Boston to St. Louis, continuing to battle and to fight amyloidosis, a disease that to this day there is still no cure. Which means that every conversation she would have with Dr. Skinner, they didn't know how many days she had left to live. And for those that don't understand amyloidosis, every single one of us in our muscles, we have amyloids. And when you have an excess of them, like Janet had, it's eating away at your muscles slowly over time. Your heart is a muscle. Janet's youngest son remembers when 24-hour nursing care came into their home, went all the way to the back of the house, removed all of the belongings from what was once her TV room. She had a little TV room and then her bedroom. All the belongings from the TV room and replaced it with the makings of a 24-hour nursing center, a hospital in her home, in her TV room. And every night without fail, because Janet understood that that burn inside of her, she understood that her purpose was going to overtake her pain. And her purpose, that burn was, I will continue to lead my two boys, regardless of pain, regardless of how many days I have left. And that would cause her mentally to lock into a place where nothing would stop her from looking down that long hallway with an IV stand in tow. And sometimes it took one Nurse, and sometimes it took two, but every night she'd put one foot in front of the other, one foot in front of the other, one foot in front of the other. Just like you may find for you so many times in your life when you pursue that big vision, that big goal, you're ready to attack, and you feel like it's so hard to move, but you just tell yourself, I gotta put one foot in front of the other, one foot in front of the other. And so she would make it to the head of that dining room table every night. And she would look over to the right at her oldest son and ask him how his day was at school. And then she would pan over to the left. And my mother would look me dead square in the eyes and say, Honey, how was your day at school? Did you notice I got the honey because I was the younger son? I gotta get you to smile a little bit because this is probably not what you expected. You see, my mother, even though in learning about the work that we do, you know I've had the opportunity and blessing to work with some of the greatest champions to ever walk the face of the earth. My mother's the greatest champion I've ever known. My mother taught me how to fight. My mother taught me what it means to have conviction. My mother taught me what it means to have passion. My mother taught me what it means to have a burn inside of you that when you connect to it, you will fight and you will not quit. So I feel this responsibility to have this conversation with you, to connect you with your burn, because that is the secret of the highest performers. That burn is what allowed my mother to make it to the dining room table every single night to ask me how my day was at school, regardless of her pain. And there were nights where I had to climb under my mother's IV wires at the end of the night to tuck her in to her bed. I was a seven-year-old boy. And even though my mother passed 11 days before my eighth birthday, and she took the pen that she was writing with in that journal and she passed it on for me to have the opportunity to continue to write her story, to continue to take the burn that lied inside of her, and now it's fueled inside of me.
Defining Your Burn And Winning
SPEAKER_00It's caused me to take this secret that I've seen in champions in sports, champions in business, and to ask you what is the burn that lies inside of you? You see, because it's this burn that causes the first time you've seen it in our work together through this Mental Toughness Academy. That vein is popping out of the neck now. And I promise you, throughout the course of our work together, I will not yell at you, but you are going to feel my passion because there's a burn inside of me because of how my mother lived. And I understand that my mother passed at 38. I've been given more years of life that she never had, one day at a time, and I will not waste a day. But you see, that's my fire that's inside of me. The question becomes what is the fire that lies inside of you? And for many, it comes from pain and challenge and adversity you've been through, similar to what I've been through. And I've done this enough times to know I'm not the only one that has a story. Each and every single one of us, you have a story. And that story probably lights a burn. And I'm not saying that why and purpose aren't important, but this is the secret. When you understand the burn, it's the burn that ignites your why and purpose and causes you to show up on the days you don't feel like it, and especially after you win. So maybe it's pain or challenge for you. Maybe it's sacrifice. Maybe you think back on your life and you say, My mom and my dad each had to have two jobs. They made an amazing sacrifice for me to have the opportunity. I cannot waste their sacrifice. Or maybe you right now, you are sacrificing for somebody, maybe in your home. Maybe there's little eyes like my two little eyes, watch my mother come to that dining room table. There's little eyes that are watching you, and you say, I cannot waste a day. I must continue to make this sacrifice. Or one of my favorite burns is the burn of those individuals who were told, You're not good enough, you're not smart enough, you're not big enough. And there's a burn that comes out that says, You just watch how I show up. And when you connect to that burn and that fire, whatever the example is, it causes you to think differently about the opportunity that lies in front of you one day at a time. And that's all we can control, winning one day at a time. The greatest champions of life have understood it's one day at a time. It's one day at a time of work, it's one day at a time of belief, it's one workout at a time, it's one meal at a time, it's one act of service at a time, it's one day at a time fueled by the burn that lies inside of you. And that is how winning is done. Because my definition of winning is your ability to look yourself in the mirror one day at a time and say, today I gave it my very best, with an honest answer, that mirror of accountability every day in front of yourself. But I believe, and I now know from studying and working with some of these highest performers ever, that the secret of this burn is what causes them to know that they're actually winning and to look in the mirror and to be honest with themselves so that they can stack the days knowing that the byproduct of stacking days is winning at very high levels. So, what is your burn? You see, my burn is not gonna get you out of bed. My burn is probably causing you to think a little more intentionally about how intentional you are with your days right now. Can you be more intentional with your thinking? More intentional with the fire that lies inside of you so that it ignites your why and purpose and you stop wasting days. And when you do win, you have a desire to keep winning. That's what the burn is all about. And for those of you that are struggling with the examples that I've given, ask yourself this question. Or actually, let me ask it of you. Grab your future and bring it to today. What do you see? I know you see something, and whatever it is, that's what you desire. That's that vision. And we're gonna talk about attaining belief in yourself. Maybe we need to grab it, put it right in front of your face, and get clear on it. Say, that's what I'm fighting for. That's the burn to make this happen. So I'm gonna have you a little challenge for you.
30-Day Burn Challenge And Closing
SPEAKER_00Inside of your mental toughness playbook, you're gonna see there's some pages on a 30-day burn challenge. I encourage you now to pause once again, and we're gonna go to work. I want you to think about your burn. I want you to feel the emotion. I want you to feel the passion of what I'm saying and allow that to open you up to think deeper and more intentionally than you ever have about that fire that lies inside of you. And then once you acknowledge and you identify what that is, I want you to say, okay, I need to change my environment so I keep this in front of me every day. Believe it or not, you can actually change the alarm on your cell phone. There's an image of my cell phone inside the playbook, and it shows you that for at my wake up time, my alarm, you can name your alarm. It says Janet Fishman Newman Legacy. So imagine if your burn is the first thing that you see every single day. When I see my mother's name on that phone, you think I hit the snooze button, there ain't a damn chance. And then I want to encourage you for 30 days to build a burn journal. It can be a blank journal like my mother's old Blue Mead notebook. You could, if you wanted to, hop on Amazon. We do have available a burn journal and prize fighter day. Opportunity for you, 365 days to go day by day. We'll talk more about your prize fighter days in the burn. But this is a yearly tracker that you can find right there on Amazon. Maybe that's how you connect every single day. But I encourage you for the next 30 days, place it somewhere in your environment, maybe it's your phone. Write it down every single day. And when you connect to it, watch how it changes your belief, watch how it changes your discipline, and how it changes the narrative of the action and the story that you're writing one day at a time. The burn is the secret of the highest performance. I want you to take 10 minutes, and I want you to pull away, and I want you to go to work, and I want you to think and take action. What is your burn? And how are you gonna bring it into your daily environment?
